Solo Exhibition
by Cristina Weiss
At the Romanian Cultural institute
A paradoxical and inciting world is conveyed by the artwork of Cristina Weiss, created using both textile collage techniques and embroidery.
The artist conceives a collection of works crafted in a picturesque vision and manner but let us not forget that her very first attempts in the artworld were made in painting and sculpture.
However, in the current stage of her artistry, Cristina Weiss unveils, through these new works, an entire range of emotions, allusions and even metaphorical suggestions.
An absolute visual delight, considering its chromatics and perceptible harmonies, her works in mixed media are the result of imagination, of the humble sewing needle, and of the combination of strips of fabric. After all, they combine not so much threads of fiber, but rather threads of stories barely guessed, glimpsed in the profiles of ghost boats, suggestions of shores and departures, or wanderings of Hansel and Gretel through imaginary forests.
The viewer can indulge in his thoughts because, in the end, her works constitute pure exercises of free thought, of stream of consciousness, a tangle of inspiration.
Or maybe her works are an allegory of reality, of today’s world, made up of such different pieces, brightly colored or dark, dull or lacy, sometimes juxtaposed with debris, textile waste.
While admiring her work, an art-loving viewer can easily find or imagine a story
and attach a meaning to it.
I’d like to credit the works of this Israeli artist with Romanian origins the feature of an optimistic motivational subtext.
